What was the best thing that happened yesterday?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 27, 2007:

I had a chance to help others, and that doesn't seem to happen too often. I took the bus to get to the mall this afternoon to run some errands and I noticed a blind old chinese man. I say old, he was probably in his late 50's or early 60's. I overheard him telling someone else he was going to the T&T Supermarket at West Ed, and I had plans to go there anyway. Bus arrives at the mall and after I get off I realize he's having trouble with the curb and getting around the crowd, benches, etc. So I offered to walk him to the market.

Don, as he introduced himself, had moved here from China when he was in univerisity "at least 30 years ago" and pretty much talked about China the whole time, but it was nice. I got him to the market (which involved an escalator >.> Who knows if anyone else would have walked with him?)

Someone was waiting at the store (employee) to help him shop, he'd phoned ahead. And surprisingly I saw him sitting on a bus when I got off my return bus at the end of the afternoon, probably on his way home or something. I feel good that I was able to help him get his errands done with less hassle in a mall that seems to have only a couple elevators (very far apart, West Edmonton Mall is like 8 blocks or so) and a crowd that seemed more concerned about pushing past him :/ (What's wrong with people?)

Another thought. Ever notice that when you're walking around, you don't see many people smiling? I found myself smiling today because I was feeling good as I was walking down the street (before the blind man stuff) and people were staring at me. Ok so I have green hair but still, it occured to me how many people I saw were not smiling. Let's say... all of them? I think my goal for the weekend is to try and smile more, maybe it'll spread.

Generally the problem occurs only in cities, where people are so consumed with themselves that they ignore everyone else around them. I’ve noticed it when I visit London and not so much in the town I live in. No one cares to help those around them, and noone smiles. If you speak to someone, don’t expect a response longer than 4 words. I hate cities, everyone is so self involved with how ponsey they can look and how successful they can be.

Good news that you’re having a smiley day :-)
